Environmental Stewardship

Thorntons has been supporting and selling bio fuels for nearly 20 years, long before “green” became a part of our everyday language. We have sold the highest quality gasoline with the octane-enhancing, cleaner burning, ethanol additive in all of our markets we serve for two decades.

More recently, bio-diesel has become more readily available. We were the first in our market areas to adopt its use as well. This product is made by blending cleaner, ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel with virgin soy-bean oil.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 sets forth rules to ensure continued growth in the use of bio-fuels. We have constructed satellite blending plants in all of our market areas to ensure continued support and compliance of these green measures.

The latest product on the market is called E-85, which consists of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, versus the traditional gasoline blends comprised of 90% gasoline and 10% ethanol. Many newer vehicles are being produced that allow for E-85 use. We are adding more locations with this product including sites in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee.
