Unleaded

Available in 87 (Unleaded), 89 (Unleaded Plus) and 92 (Super Unleaded) octanes, our unleaded fuels contain up to 10% ethanol and are safe to use in any vehicle manufactured after 1980,excluding diesel vehicles.

Unleaded15TM provides an octane rating of 88. It contains approximately 15% ethanol and is approved by the EPA for use in model year 2001 or newer cars, light-duty trucks, SUVs and Flex Fuel Vehicles. Consult your vehicle’s manufacturer for compatibility and warranty details. Unleaded15 is the most tested fuel in the marketplace to date, typically costs less than Unleaded, and is widely believed to deliver better performance and fewer harmful emissions.

Unleaded15 is not an approved fuel for vehicles model year 2000 and older, motorcycles, off-road vehicles (like snowmobiles and boats), vehicles with heavy-duty engines (such as buses and delivery trucks), or engines in off-road equipment (like lawnmowers and chainsaws).

FAQ’s

Q: Why is Thorntons offering Unleaded15?
A: In addition to promoting cleaner air through reduced carbon emissions and helping reduce our dependence on foreign oil, we also want to offer our guests the widest possible selection of fuels to meet their vehicle’s needs.

Q: What is ethanol?
A: Unlike petroleum, which is a limited resource, ethanol is an alcohol fuel derived from plant materials like corn or sugar cane, making it renewable. A majority of the ethanol that is blended into gasoline today is produced domestically, helping to support our agricultural economy.

Q: Will Unleaded15 hurt my engine?
A: Unleaded15 is EPA approved for use in 2001 and newer cars, trucks, and SUVs, representing more than 80% of the vehicles on the road today. We recommend consulting your vehicle’s manufacturer for compatibility and warranty details.

Q: What are the benefits of using Unleaded15?
A: Unleaded15 is a great choice for many reasons.

Cost – Unleaded15 typically costs less than Unleaded, which saves our guests money at the pump.

Performance – The increased ethanol content in Unleaded15 provides an octane rating of 88, which falls between Unleaded (87) and Unleaded Plus (89). Fuels with higher octane ratings have the potential to offer improved engine performance and efficiency, depending on several variables (including vehicle type and driving style).

Reduced Harmful Emissions – Ethanol burns cleaner in engines, with data from the Argonne National Laboratory showing that on average corn ethanol reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 34% or more compared to gasoline.

What is E85?

E85 can be used in all Flex Fuel Vehicles manufactured after 2008 (2006 for GM vehicles). It is a gasoline-ethanol blend containing up to 85% ethanol. Since ethanol is biodegradable, nontoxic, and water-soluble, E85 contains roughly 80% less of the contaminants that can be found in Unleaded gasoline.

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between Unleaded15 and E85?
A: Both fuel products consist of gasoline blended with ethanol. The level of ethanol in each fuel is the primary difference. E85 can only be used in Flex Fuel Vehicles.

Q: If my vehicle is approved for the use of Unleaded15, does that mean I can use E85?
A: If you have a Flex Fuel Vehicle, you can use both products. E85 cannot be used in non-Flex Fuel Vehicles.

How do I know if I have a Flex-Fuel vehicle?

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are several indicators on your vehicle to determine whether it is capable of using flexible fuel.
